In the Fall of 1992, eight gentlemen decided to organize a local fraternity that would provide an alternate lifestyle for Columbus State students. The name of the fraternity was uncertain. One of the members, Robert Brooks, mentioned that his grandfather was a Sigma Nu. They decided to model their fraternity around the value and principles of Sigma Nu. After long consideration, these gentlemen decided that the principles and morals that Sigma Nu provided would be the perfect fit to the organization they were trying to create. The founding members were Robert Brooks, Jeff Carter, Layne Martin, David Jennings, Lee Boyd, Robbie Bishop, Jon Haralson, and Harry Bannister.
Now that the brothers had chosen Sigma Nu, they needed guidance. Robert Brooks sought out the help of Kevin Fitzgerald (Theta Alpha 391), a Sigma Nu alumini of the University of South Florida. Kevin was introduced to the remainder of our founders and was impressed enough to offer his full assistance. Once guidance was obtained, the recruiting of new quality members (and future leaders) was to follow.
The brothers then began diligently working on the foundation and guidelines that were necessary to establish a solid fraternity at CSU. Sigma Nu immediately became involved extensively on campus and in the community. Although support from other fraternal organizations was non-existent, the founding brothers forged on by conducting the first formal rush. The turnout was minimal but the stressed quality to ensure longevity for Sigma Nu. With the guidance of Kevin Fitzgerald, they formed their own induction rituals and ceremonies. Sigma Nu continued with various philanthropies and campus growth as time passed on. In less than two years, Sigma Nu became the largest fraternal organization CSU had ever seen.
Sigma Nu now provides exemplary leadership throughout the campus and in the community. Our members span across all types of school organizations and community organizations. Some of these include Greek Council, SGA, IFC, Order of Omegs, College Republicans, Servant Leadership, and many more. As you see, Sigma Nu strives for excellence. Through the good times (and the bad), Sigma Nu continues and will continue to create the most respectable, intelligent, and well carried men CSU has ever seen.
